Lichen Meeting to Bradford Dale, Derbyshire

Tuesday 8 October 2024

Leader: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk

The main habitats in this delightful limestone dale will be the trees, walls and hillside outcrops alongside the River Bradford. The vast majority of records for the dale date from the mid-1990’s with just 10 others dated 2011. We can expect to record some significant changes in the lichen flora (or should I now be saying ‘funga’?).

Meet at 10:30am in the centre of Middleton by Youlgreave at grid ref SK195631. There is ample roadside parking.

As always beginners are most welcome as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens. Bring the usual field kit and some suitable outdoor clothing. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.

Lichen Meeting to Wetton Mill, Manifold Valley, Staffordshire

Tuesday 3 September 2024

Leader: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk

Trees, carboniferous limestone outcrops and drystone walls will be the main lichen habitats to be studied at this meeting. There are very few records for this immediate area and being located towards the south-west corner of the Sorby recording area it is rarely visited by the Society.

Meet at 10:30am at grid ref SK09475608 where there is a generous amount of layby and roadside parking. This is to the west of Wetton Mill just over the river-bridge on the minor road to Ecton.

As always beginners are most welcome as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens. Bring the usual field kit and some suitable outdoor clothing. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.

Lichen Meeting to Bradwell Moor lead mine workings, Derbyshire

Saturday 17 August 2024

Contact: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk

This meeting will look at the lichens of the old lead workings on this limestone plateau. As well as the lead workings there are the limestone walls and outcrops to study. There is a dearth of records for this immediate area.

Meet at 10:30am at grid ref SK141795 on the Batham Gate (course of Roman Road). There is some track-side parking here and also 200m south near the next bend in the road.

As always beginners are most welcome as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens. Bring a the usual field kit and some suitable outdoor clothing - this plateau area is at over 400m altitude and up here even in summer the weather can feel rough. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.

Lichen & Invertebrate Group Meeting to Pleasley Pit Country Park, Derbyshire

Saturday 13 July 2024

Please note: it is not worth coming to this meeting if lichens are your only interest.

Following a recce visit to the site made recently the report is that the lichen interest here is minimal: 1 out of 10 at best. However it is good to report that the invertebrate and floristic interest is 9 out of 10.

The site having been heavily re-seeded with wild flowers the early stage coalfield regeneration, during which there may be a good Cladonia coverage and diversity, is well over.

Meet at 10.30am at the main car park (grid ref SK499643). The Country Park is accessed from the major traffic island on the A617 at Pleasley. There are toilets and a cafe on site. A site map can be downloaded from the Derbyshire County Council website – do a web-search for ‘Pleasley Pit Country Park’.

This reclaimed colliery site offers a range of habitats including developing secondary woodland with lots of scrubby margins, hedgerows, flower rich magnesian limestone grassland and dragonfly ponds. There are no lichen records at all and there’s plenty to go at invertebrate-wise.

Lichen Meeting to the Via Gellia Woodlands, Middleton, Derbyshire

Thursday 16 May 2024

Contact: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk

We will record in the woodland edge along a relatively open track (not too steep!) up and across the south facing side of the valley. Higher up there are a few limestone outcrops in short grassland and drystone walls to add a bit of variety. Dotted amongst the deciduous trees are stands of larch. This meeting is joint with the Sorby Invertebrate Group and it is hoped to re-confirm the 2016 records of the Northern Hairy Wood-ant (Formica lugubris) – a species which is rare in limestone country.

Meet at 10.30am at the lay-by on the A5012 Newhaven to Cromford road – grid ref SK265565. Travelling downhill in the direction of Cromford this lay-by is on the left hand side about 500m after the junction for Middleton.

As always beginners are most welcome as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens and invertebrates. Bring a hand lens, note book, field guides and usual field kit. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.
