Sorby Natural History Society (Sheffield)
Lichen Meeting to the Via Gellia Woodlands, Middleton, Derbyshire
Thursday 16 May 2024
Contact: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk
We will record in the woodland edge along a relatively open track (not too steep!) up and across the south facing side of the valley. Higher up there are a few limestone outcrops in short grassland and drystone walls to add a bit of variety. Dotted amongst the deciduous trees are stands of larch. This meeting is joint with the Sorby Invertebrate Group and it is hoped to re-confirm the 2016 records of the Northern Hairy Wood-ant (Formica lugubris) – a species which is rare in limestone country.
Meet at 10.30am at the lay-by on the A5012 Newhaven to Cromford road – grid ref SK265565. Travelling downhill in the direction of Cromford this lay-by is on the left hand side about 500m after the junction for Middleton.
As always beginners are most welcome as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens and invertebrates. Bring a hand lens, note book, field guides and usual field kit. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.
