Wessex Lichen Group New Year Meeting

The Wessex Lichen Group New Year will be held at Vinney Ridge in the New Forest. This is a small but rich area of ancient Beech and Oak pasture woodland, which I have not looked at since 2004. This meeting will effectively finish my COVID shutdown inspired campaign to revisit every 1km square with old woodland in the New Forest. 
 
Meet at the car park at SU260057 Monday 2nd January 2023 at 10.30. Bring lunch, stout footwear and a handlens if you have them (can be supplied), all day meeting if weather good. Beginners welcome. Please reply to Neil if coming so I have an idea of numbers.

On 19 November five people met up for a day looking especially at the lichen thallus, with expert guidance from David Hill who gave a wide-ranging presentation on the details that can be seen under the microscope, many of which are critical for identification, then down to examination including practical hints on dissection and slide preparation. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 10 December when fruiting bodies will be the focus. 

Cofnod Conference, North Wales

COFNOD is the North Wales centre for wildlife information, one of four Local Environmental Records Centres in Wales. On 10th February they held a conference at Llandrillo College where a number of organisations presented the results of nature conservation and habitat restoration projects. Raymond Griffiths and Eluned Smith attended, to raise awareness of the BLS, to sell books and posters and to make contacts among the wildlife community in Wales.

Wessex Lichen Group - An Introduction to  New Forest Cladonia, Boltons Bench, New Forest

A field workshop on Cladonia identification in the New Forest led by Neil A Sanderson. Learn about this beautiful but often confusing group of lichens in one of the richest sites in England for the group. There will be a short PDF guide together beforehand and pictures and identification can be found on the Species and Maps pages (see https://britishlichensociety.org.uk/resources/species-accounts?species=Cladonia+).

Meet at the Parc Pale car park, Boltons Bench at SU307 079 link at 10.30. Bring lunch and a hand lens if you have one (BLS hand lenses available for those who do not have any). Please email Neil if you want to attend, so that he has an idea of numbers.
