North East England Lichen Group field trip
Date: 17th August 2026
Time: 10.30
Location: we will visit two sites near the village of Bowes off the A66.
Meeting Point: meet in car park adjacent to mini roundabout in centre of village.NY996134.
Details: In the morning we will walk down to Gilmonby Bridge and examine woodland west of the bridge and possibly limestone walls beyond the wood. In the afternoon we will drive through the village and then north to West Stoney Keld where there is plenty of parking. We will examine sandstone walls alongside the open access land. A fascinating addition is to walk the 1km to Levy Pool – the only farmhouse in Durham that still has a ling (heather roof).
