Zoom event: improvers lichen microscopy

Event Type
Training events
Start date
Event Description:

Third date: 25th November (the first session was held 23rd September and second on 28th October, however it is fine to attend just one session)

Time: 7pm for approximately 1.5 hours

Leader: Di Napier

Location: Zoom call with Host Ann Claypole

The sessions are aimed at anyone who already has some experience of lichen microscopy.  They offer an informal opportunity to share your microscopy successes and challenges with others.

Email zoom-microscopy@britishlichensociety.org.uk if you are interested in joining this group, or for more information.  If you are a beginner (with microscopes, but limited experience) and would be interested in a few introductory sessions focused on getting started, cutting sections etc, please contact the same email address.

Ideally, bring along some photos to share, or just come along to listen.  It’s fine to attend just one session or all. Questions and contributions especially welcome from anyone lacking confidence.  We’re all learning.  If you haven’t shared photos in a Zoom session before, don’t be put off, we can help you with that.

In previous sessions we have looked at aspects of microscopy such as staining sections, using polarising filters, interpretation of what we can see, sectioning more awkward fruiting bodies, such as lirellae and perithecia (including the use of embedding in PVA or Gum Arabic).  We can revisit any of these, or maybe find new things to look at.

Useful reading: the BLS website page “Microscope Work”, especially the two links to information about cutting sections, written by John Skinner and Mark Powell.
