Lichen Meeting to Upper Dove Valley, Crowdicote
Tuesday 30th August 2022
(please note the change of date from the 23 Aug as originally advertised)
Leader: Steve Price, email: lichenrecords@sorby.org.uk
The limestone exposures in this part of the Upper Dove Valley have been little recorded – this is a chance to put that right.
This is a meeting joint with the Sorby Invertebrate Group.
The rocky outcrops and flower rich pastures of the south-west facing hillsides above the village of Crowdicote in the limestone country of the upper Dove Valley offer plenty of potential for recording a good range of both lichens and invertebrates.
Meet at 10.30am with road-side parking on the minor road immediately to the south-east of High Needham - grid ref. SK112653. This is 2.5km west of the A515 Buxton to Ashbourne road and 1.5km east of Crowdicote.
This is one of a number of events being held throughout the country during August which will include an element of commemoration to Frank Dobson who passed away in December 2021. It is the successive editions of Frank's book “Lichens: An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species”, first published in 1979, together with his teaching that has enabled so many field naturalists to take an active interest in lichens.
As always beginners are most welcome, bring a hand lens and a note book, as are Members wishing to study areas of interest other than lichens and invertebrates. The plan is for a full day meeting so do bring along a drink and lunch.
