Event Description:

These are the preliminary details for two seminars on lichen identification, the first on 19th November and the second 10 December 2022. The two seminars, each with a different theme, are designed for those who have already had an introduction to lichens and now want to know more about lichens and improve their identification skills.

The 19th November seminar deals with the vegetative thallus. This will also help identifying sterile lichens (specimens without fruiting bodies). It includes foliose, fruticose and crustose lichens.

The 10th December seminar will deal with fertile lichens and reproduction by spores and will concentrate more on microscopic work.

Both seminars will begin with a tutorial session for about 1 hour followed by practical activities. Some lichen material will be provided for the practical work but participants will need to bring some of their own. You are encouraged to investigate what interests you the most and where you feel you need most help. The style will be one of working together and helping each other. In both seminars participants will need to bring a dissecting (binocular)microscope and a slide microscope. Consumables eg chemical reagents and slides etc will be provided.

This event is free.
