Cladonia squamosa var. squamosa

Taxon

Cladonia squamosa var. squamosa

Authority
(Scop.) Hoffm. (1796)
Conservation Status
BLS Number
2365
General Description

A chemotype of Cladonia squamosa with thallus C–, K–, KC–, Pd–, UV+ vivid white (squamatic and ± barbatic acids; chemotype A) which was not considered worthy of formal recognition by Pino-Bodas et al (2021) since thamnolic and squamatic acids are very closely related biosynthetically and the morphological distinction is questionable. Scanning with a UV light sometimes reveals that the two chemotypes can occur in close association, sometimes apparently within the same thallus. This chemotype is commoner in woodland and less acid habitats than var. subsquamosa but occurs throughout.

For the time being the taxa is still being recorded by the BLS mapping scheme.
