Event description: intermediate to advanced course on coastal lichens
Location: St. George’s House, Christian Outdoor Centre, Georgeham, Braunton EX33 1JN
Tutors: John Skinner & Maxine Putnam
Aims: the aim of the course is to familiarise participants with a range of maritime habitats on a coastline with varied and complex geology. A number of communities will be studied and in addition to common coastal taxa some rarer lichens will be included.
Each day will consist of a field trip and a laboratory session supported by access to a full herbarium. The focus will be on lichen identification using both dissecting and compound microscopes.
By the end of the course the participants should be able to recognise most of the commonly occurring lichens found on and near the coast and be confident in recognising microhabitats.
The course is aimed at those who feel confident in the Skills & Knowledge Stage 2 and above (check the BLS website under the Learning Tab).
Cost: the BLS will be covering the course costs but attendees are asked to pay for their accommodation and evening meals and make an additional contribution of £75 towards teaching costs.
Once your application is confirmed please send the course fee (£75) and £60 deposit for accommodation to the BLS.
The cost of accommodation is £140 for 4 nights and the cost for 4 evening meals £100 approx. There are 10 bunk bedrooms so single occupation will be possible in most cases.
For information on financial support please refer to the Grants section of the BLS website.
