BLS AUTUMN MEETING 2017 – Epping Forest

6th September 2017, 20:00 to 10th September 2017 Afternoon

Event Description:

Wednesday 6th (evening) to Sunday 10th (afternoon), September 2017

local organiser – John Skinner

Epping Forest is due for a re-survey - last looked at in 2003 by Peter James and Linda Davies when 64 species were recorded. Records going back to 1784 show that the forest’s lichen flora has mirrored the changes in air quality and composition over the years. Many changes can expected to be found on this Society visit.

A room in the Field Studies Council field centre has been booked for evening use on Wed, Thur, Fri and Sat.

The meeting will convene at 7pm (not 8.00pm as previously notified) on Wenesday 6th September at the Epping Forest Field Centre for an introductory talk.

There being no suitable group accommodation in the area attendees will have to make their own arrangements. See the list below for some suggestions.

Our centre for examination of specimens is the Epping Forest Conservation Centre, Paul’s Nursery Road,High Beach, Essex, IG10 4AF. Telephone: 020 8502 8500

It is an FSC centre but non-residential, catering almost exclusively for 1-day educational visits. It is 5 minutes drive from junction 26 of the M25. It has parking.

We have a workroom booked for the evening of Wednesday 6 September when we shall start at 7.00pm for an introductory talk and discussion. We then have it booked from 4.00pm until 8.00pm for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is possible that we may be able to extend this to 9.00pm but that depends on some personal circumstances of the person who is our contact at the centre.

The centre is next to a large pub, The Royal Oak, which serves a typical range of pub food at various prices. It is a busy place with, it says, a strict dress code (men must wear shirts). Some attendees might be happy to eat there (or elsewhere) after the evening session while people who like to eat earlier might like to slip out during the evening.

Further details of sites visits etc will be sent to those interested in attending the meeting.

To indicate an interest in the meeting email Steve Price, the Field Meetings Secretary, on fieldmeetings@britishlichensociety.org.uk or by post to Woodlands, Combs Road, Combs, High Peak SK23 9UP.

The general plan is that we meet every day at a different car park (not at the Field Centre except possibly on Friday) to explore a section of the Forest. We will meet at 10.00am and at least some of us will move to the Field Centre at around 4.00pm. There are tea and coffee making facilities and a microwave at the Centre and there is a pub that serves food next door.

You will have to bring a packed lunch and bear in mind that there are no toilets at any of our sites.

Most sites have adequate car parking, the only one that is possibly problematical being Wintry Wood where the car park is very small.

If you are travelling by public transport it is essential that you liaise with John Skinner to arrange a lift to the site of the day. He is happy to collect people from stations and transport them to and fro, as long as he has time to plan for it.
